So here is the important question… “what one can do to become a primary candidate for a trainee or an apprenticeship besides completing an automotive course whether it be Automotive course, school or Tafe.
In This blog I will explain how to get the necessary skills required to be employed as a Apprentice mechanic or trainee, How to think correctly & a process required to get started & where to get answers.
YOU MUST UNDERSTAND… CARS ARE NOW COMPUTERS ON WHEELS!
Because of the above statement there are two factions of the trade you must get your head around. And they are…
1/HOW DOES An INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE WORK?
2/ ELECTRICS, INCORPORATING COMPUTERS
To be a Motor Mechanic you must know the first principals of how a Motor… Actually a Engine functions, You must know the four cycles- Induction, compression, power & exhaust,
Electrics- example- how does a car electrical system go from a 12-volt battery to 20 000 volts at the spark plug?
if you do not research & understand the principals of a engine’s operation your application as an Apprentice mechanic is wasted & unfortunately useless because you are blind & unprepared.
What does a Mechanic do? A good mechanic solves a problem by studying & understanding a system locating the problem & fix the problem, THEY REVIEW THE RESULT- IS IT FIXED OR NOT?
You cannot just hope to give a resume with a successful history of making pizza`s and expect to get a Apprenticeship without any groundwork or preparation YOU CANNOT” WING IT” OR” FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT” You must be able to apply yourself intelligently.
1/ Attitude & Commitment
You must have a vision in your head “I`m going to do this no matter what!” attitude.
“I want to learn how this car works; I want to rebuild it make it go!” now that’s the attitude part- The commitment is the work involved- Young People want a 10 second fast & furious car- but for every second you want to shave off it will cost you 5000- $10 000 & the time to educate yourself & this what separates the winners & the losers-acquiring skills takes practice, practice & more practice- not many are willing to endure until they have gained the skill & its here where most give up…
But the kicker is the word learn- I cannot stress this enough- you must be willing to ask questions- even if its embarrassing, people say knowledge is power- that is not correct- Knowledge & doing is power.
HOW DO YOU GET HANDS- ON EXPERIENCE?
ANSWER… BUY YOURSELF A CAR & TOOLS- THIS IS COMMITMENT…
DO NOT WAIT & EXPECT SOME- ONE TO SHOW YOU-
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE TEACHER DOES NOT SHOW UP? – BECOME YOUR OWN TEACHER INSTEAD…
This is self-reliance & how you build self-confidence.
Now you may already have a car, but this is ground zero for your automotive education…
2/- buy a car- Example say a Mitsubishi Lancer 2010
Study what type of engine is in the car- say a 2 litre twin cam…Now find out how does the engine work, what are the four operating cycles, Induction, compression ,power, exhaust, how does the air enter, where does it travel- what are intake & exhaust manifolds, valves, where are the spark plugs-what do they do, oil, air & fuel filters, sump plug- How do I do a service, what is a tune up & so on study, study & more study learn everything you can. By focusing & studying the car you are developing skills which can be used on all other cars this is exactly what employers are looking for.
So, the question is where do you get the answers or the knowledge? –
Answer- 1/ YouTube 2/ Google it 3/ Forums/ 4 online manuals-fee is involved.
The internet has been a gamechanger- 75- 80% of all your answers are on YouTube- no excuses.
3/ Journal & photograph everything
You are investing in yourself- you must be able to monitor your progress- here is the kicker by working on your car- writing down or journalling the process & taking photos- YOU CAN ADD THAT TO YOUR RESUME! You have proof of your work! & that puts you ahead of the usual- hard worker, consensus autonomous dribble I get on resumes when people are explaining themselves… you on the other hand have proof- let me say “nothing beats a person who knows what they want & are determined to get it through intelligent means of well organized work!.”
Summary
My 3-step process 1/ Attitude, Commitment 2/Project car to work on 3/Journalling photographing monitor your progress.
Never ever be afraid of mistakes- mistakes will happen & it may be costly, but this can be the best learning tool for your education YOU CAN NEVER MASTER ANYTHING BEING AFRAID.!
What I have talked about is pre conditioning for employment- you have committed yourself BEFORE you have got the apprentice/trainee job, you have become proactive- you have educated & moulded yourself as prime candidate by actually doing, asking questions you shown yourself as some one willing to pay the price, you have displayed faith in yourself, you have endured until you have reached a basic competent level, you have invested in yourself by buying tools, you know how to research, find the relevant information, you know how to replace spark plugs, do basic servicing- this is exactly what Employers are looking for… by investing, educating in a organized fashion you have made it easier for a Employer to invest in you…
All the very best…
