Emission Testing North Brisbane

2020 has started with ridiculous heat, a national drought & terrible bushfires in Victoria, New South Wales & parts of South Australia.

Not a good time to take a holiday in Hawaii..

Due to these events that have just mentioned, here at Mannys Mechanical Repairs, we have decided to lead the charge with implementing emission testing North Brisbane.

This testing will happen on all vehicles when serviced & repaired and on safety certificate inspections.

Vehicle Emission Testing

We have just upgraded on a new Gas Analyser to measure vehicle emissions on Petrol, Diesel, LPG & Natural Gas-

We can supply a print out on the state of your vehicle emissions at idle (sitting in traffic) & at 3000 rpm (cruise modes).

CO: Carbon Monoxide

The combusted dangerous gas that can kill in high concentrations. The lower the reading the better generally we are looking less than .5% with a good catalytic converter this can be down to 0%

HC: Hydrocarbons

is the unburnt fuel- left in the combustion process- This is a major polluter & effects the ozone layer. Hydrocarbons are measured in parts per million (ppm) the lower the better!

Co2: Carbon dioxide

Carbon Dioxide is a result of the combustion process- the higher the percentage the better combustion process which means the engine is running efficiently- still high levels of carbon dioxide cause Green house effect – possible global warming

O2: Oxygen

is measured- excess level of oxygen means there is a possible exhaust leakage which can effect emission readings or a engine fault. Though the gas analyser is a balance system- if there is a abnormal reading it will show irregular readings on the other settings.

NOx: Nitrogen oxide

This one is the bad one- a mixture of nitrogen & oxygen added with fuel hydrocarbons(Diesel)  Nox is released under extreme combustion heat- To combat this manufactures add a EGR- Exhaust gas recirculation system to cool & lower NOx .

NOx gases causes Acid rain & Asthma.

Lambda & Air/Fuel Ratio

The ideal air/fuel Ratio for petrol is 14.7:1, Diesels can range from 14.5 :1 to  20 :1 That is 20 air molecules to 1 fuel molecule. lambda is a nominated reading by the engine software calibrator but generally a lambda of 1 is 14.7 :1 reference

Emission Testing North Brisbane

By reading the above, you can be assured we take our work seriously.

Global Warming is serious stuff and we can do our part to ensure vehicles are properly serviced, tuned & keep the polluters off the road.

What is Timing Belt?

Have you ever wondered what a Timing Belt is?

Engine breathing & more important air flow is the heart & soul of good performance of a internal combustion engine.

How a Timing Belt works

I have selected 3 pictures to try to capture the job of a timing belt. The quintessential word here is “TIME”.

A brief run down:

In a nutshell the engine is a air pump with a piston moving up & down. The down speed of the piston causes a negative pressure (vacuum) and air enters the chamber via a intake valve (this can be through one or two valves) –  Induction Stroke.

The intake valve closes at a precise time, when the piston moves up it compresses the air & injected fuel (compression stroke) and the spark plug fires, causing a combustion process resulting in a flame front & high pressure. The combustion pressure forces the piston down at a precise time sending torque down the crankshaft turning linear force into rotating torque (power stroke).

As the pistons ends the downward travel, the exhaust valve opens at a precise time. The piston then moves back up pushing exhaust gases out the exhaust valve (exhaust stroke).

Why Do I have to Replace the Timing Belt

Timing is the issue & it has to be precise. To open & close valves at the precise time in relation to piston position, this requires a timing belt. These timing belts are due to be replaced approximately every ten years or at 60 000km – 100 000km. Some makes have different time intervals, so please refer to your repair manual for the exact times.

Stretched timing belts can throw the whole series of engine stroke events totally out of sync with the valve events, resulting in poor performance, poor fuel economy even possible engine failure!

Why so expensive to replace?

Replacing timing belts should also incorporate replacing the water pump. Some vehicles may require the engine to be removed from the car to replace the timing belt.

Many manufactures require special holding and locking tools to hold engine components in the exact position to install the belts. This can be very expensive just to get the right tools to do the job.

What is a Timing Belt?

Manny`s Mechanical repairs specialises in engine Tuning & excellent fuel economy, replacing timing belts, water pumps & timing chains. We ensure your vehicle is up to date & have the equipment to measure good fuel economy & power. Replacing timing belts is critical & should not be avoided costing can be around $1000.00 including labour(approx.), but that is better than losing your engine due to hubris or neglect.

I hope this has helped.

Car Services

Cars are complex- make no mistake about it.

Electrics, computers, can-bus communication and all other necessities, there is a protocol which technicians have to follow- unfortunately the general public has no idea what is required so here is a attempt to demystify the whole process of servicing.

What is in a Car Service?

A service can be broken into three categories

  1. Parts
  2. Consumables
  3. Labour

Labour

  • basic general service for a car only

car services

The vehicle is checked over for damage & scratches before test drive-test drive incorporates, listening for knocks, squeaks, rattles, driving braking shuddering. a full electronic check- load test battery @150-200 amps & monitor load performance, light check, interior lights power windows, perform full electronic computer scan-with report, check fuel trims.- under bonnet, check drive belts, check for any leaks (coolant or oil) check brake fluid & coolant concentrations, check radiator& cooling system, top up all levels.

Jack up car (HALF WAY) – check steering and suspension (shock absorbers, ball joints)  remove wheels check tyres-note condition, rotate tyres-check tyre pressures. Check brakes- include brake hoses , adjust brakes & hand brake.

Fully jack car up – drain oil, replace oil filter, check gear box & differential oil levels, inspect & report exhaust damage, engine & transmission mounts, check for lower suspension wear (IF ANY)-Check drive shafts(for torn boots or cv damage),tail shafts, grease if applicable. check for any structural damage or rust.

Lower car – fill with correct fresh oil- check air filter- replace if necessary, start vehicle-check for leaks-test drive.

Time is about 1- 1.5 hours price approx $120- $189.

Parts

If your car has a turbo (Diesel or Petrol) only full synthetic oil will be used.

Oil prices can range between $60- $120 –depending on make/model.

  • Oil filter approx $18-$38
  • Air filter approx $22.00- $80.00
  • Fuel filter approx $35-$145
  • Spark plugs range from general plug $8.00 each to $55+ each ( may take 8 plugs

Consumables

  • Wiper blades  $12- $66.00 each
  • Coolant $15.00 a litre
  • Brake fluid $22.00 a litre

Car Services

I have bared my soul when it comes to servicing prices my opposition will of course undercut me because that is business- A word of warning-beware of cheap service prices-gimmicks or gurus when you use a booking agency-you are sending money overseas(THEY TAKE 30% OF THE BOOKING FEE).., to finish  a small 4 cylinder car which is constantly serviced average price is around $250 – $300. Diesel 4wd can be around the $450 + diesel parts can be expensive-but i strongly recommend a diesel fuel filter with every service

Turbo Tuning and Repairs Brisbane

Are you looking for Turbo Tuning and Repairs Brisbane?

Manny’s Mechanical Repairs are Brisbane’s finest Mechanical Repairers for Turbo Tuning and Repairs.

If you are looking for Turbo Tuning and Repairs call Manny on 0411 496 621 and book a service in.

What is a Turbo?

Turbo is short for a TURBO-CHARGER , A turbo charger is effectively a air pump driven by exhaust pulses from a car engines exhaust manifold, the exhaust gases spins a turbine wheel which is joined by a shaft to  a compressor wheel- the compressor wheel pumps compressed air to the engine intake-via a intercooler this compressed air enters the engine intake under a boost state which creates a denser group of air molecules to enter the engine, combined with the right amount  fuel in the engine combustion chamber, resulting in a bigger combustion event-creating more power.

Why are there so many turbo vehicles?

In a nutshell smaller engines create less emissions & are cheaper to make, combined with a turbo a small engine can make big power under load- hence the benefit of a small car features with extra power when needed. Diesels have increased power and fuel economy with advance technology in diesel fuel delivery & turbo chargers achieving incredible mileage with every tank of fuel.

Turbo Maintenance

Vehicle with turbo-chargers should be maintained more often than normally aspirated engines.

  1. Recommend good quality FULL synthetic oil to be used (0W-30)
  2. Service intervals should be every 6000km-8000km NOT 15000KM ( Far too long)  as recommended by some manufactures
  3. Correct heat range spark plugs, good quality air, fuel & oil filters must be used
  4. For Diesels recommend fuel filter with every service.

Manny`s Mechanical Repairs- Services ,Tunes, Diagnose & Repairs high performance Petrol turbo & Diesel turbo engines.

We rectify intercooler leaks, cracks, monitor engine performance using our Dyno machine-measure emissions, measure, monitor boost operation & waste gate & variable vane operation.

Pictured below is a 2016 4 cylinder ECOBOOST MUSTANG on our dyno.

This Mustang is pushing 230 horsepower from a 4 cylinder tubocharged(direct injected) engine – compare that to a normal aspirated engine of 80-100 horsepower this is how much difference a well designed turbo can make.

Car Noises and Vibrations Brisbane

Are you experiencing weird Car Noises and Vibrations Brisbane but not sure what might be causing it?

Read below some things you could be experiencing in your car and what you can do to fix it.

In the last few weeks I have had a number of customers who have had obvious problems with their cars- but have ignored vital signs because of their busy hectic lives, one case we just had a customer actually lost complete brake hydraulics in his front brakes- luckily he did not hurt himself or any one else.

The problem on hand is that if you choose to ignore these noises/signs then you actually become a customized to their frequency and the brain thinks this is normal-when in actual fact it’s a prelude of worse things to come.

Car – KNOCKS (Engine or suspension)

Knocking is the bad one- knocking/tapping-engine or suspension means metal on metal at a frequency it can mean poor or no lubrication, broken components, or component failure I have had cases where this has been ignored resulting in total engine seizure. (Worn ball joints, sway bar mounts, broken springs)-recommend not to drive and get towed to your work shop.

Car – GRINDING or GROANING

The two most common components that grind are brake component failure or a bearing roller failure-this could be wheel bearings, drive or tail- shaft bearing anything that has a bearing in it, Brake pads or brake linings can wear away to metal on metal surfaces, if you detect grinding I recommend getting the vehicle towed to your workshop

CAR – SQUEALING

Squeals can be manmade warning signs warning you that your brakes are worn low, squeals can be caused by dust particles between two surfaces or lack of lubrication in a bearing, dry ball joints, cracked or hard fan belts, squealing is a sign of worse things to come- so do not hope the noise will go away-just get it check out as soon as possible.

Car – THUMPING

Thumps are generally a suspension failure or a broken engine or gearbox mounts, thumping of a shock absorber is common when the internal shock valve or rod is damaged & has lost it hydraulic oil. Thumping may even be a out of round or scalloped tyre,-again if you detect a thump get it check out immediately.

Car – STEERING SHUDDER/ BRAKE PEDAL PULSATION

This one is not a noise but still very common, the main culprits of steering shudder is 1-out of round tyres or a tyre with a impact fracture, these tyres have been distorted and have lost their symmetrical shape. Another cause for steering shudder is distorted brake disc rotors-the distorted brake rotor pulses the brake pads back and forward as the brakes are applied. Also brake pulsating pedal can also be distorted rear brake rotors or a faulty wheel bearing.

Car Noises and Vibrations

There are numerous noises & vibrations which can happen in a car, there are many more for I have nominated the most common, remember if a noise or vibration begins do not endure with the issue hoping it will go away- nip it in the bud early for it will save you a lot of cash & make your car safer.

I hope this has helped – Manny 0411 496 621

Car Diagnostics must be based on Facts – not assumptions!

Recently a very despondent friend of a good customer rang me about a severe engine knock he had in his 2013  Ford Ranger.  This vehicle had been to two other workshops & both condemned the engine he even got A quote of $15000 to replace the engine.

The ford Ranger was driven up to my workshop, which there was a terrible loud knock coming from the engine. The customer showed me the two invoices and a pico compression sheet verifying two cylinders low on compression. The customer even rang a Ford dealership who said ‘The engines go often on these cars’.

My mind went into overtime buzzing as it does.. Something was not right. How can a relatively new engine (5 years old) with a 180 000km which is not that high for a diesel, fail like that. The vehicle had been regularly serviced & not neglected, was it a fuel fault-running to lean or metal fatigue failure? We needed to know!

I asked Ricky my Head Mechanic to use the Snap on borescope to check out the failed cylinders.

Ricky removed the engine covers proceeded to remove the injectors when he stumbled on a diesel leak pictured above as he touched the injectors & noticed they had moved.

The securing plate held down by two bolts had come loose and this caused the injectors to pound up & down which then initiated engine knock also the diesel fuel line had vibrated loose.

Ricky tightened the bolts & the fuel line then started the engine-“ PRESTO.., FIX!” Ricky took the Ranger for a test drive & went like a dream.

There is a moral to this story…First find mechanics who have morals, Second DIAGNOSTICS MUST BE BASED ON FACTS- NOT ASSUMPTIONS OR HEARSAY BS!

We saved the customer $15000 engine replacement (not $150.00 or $1500 but $15000) because we went the extra mile.

Diagnostics must be based on cause & effect – What caused the problem?

Sure we deal with the effect but going the extra mile to use a expensive borescope to verify the problem found us the solution- before we even had to remove any engine component.

Expensive equipment like this Snapon borescope is commitment to accurate diagnostics.

snap on borescope

When a mechanic who assumes or a friend of the family who gives their useless opinion , (better still the all macho alpha male boyfriend) about your car problems-please know that they are wrong 90% of the time.

A organized problem/diagnostic procedure with the best equipment, skills and A iron will to help people solve their car problems is what customers should be looking for-never assume

When you ASSUME  you make a arse out of you and me

Manny`s Mechanical Repairs is based in Enoggera where we specialize in Car engine problems, accurate diagnostics, car tuning , car performance tuning, turbo diesel servicing, Ford ranger service & repairs. Mazda bt50 service & repairs, car dyno tuning. Getting good fuel economy &power for your car.

Why Engine Oil Changes Are So Critical (Never Ever Neglect or Go Cheap)

In the 37 years I have been in the automotive industry (yes, I am old) nothing has caused more damage to car engines than neglect of quality servicing.

Cars now have more smaller engines which are delivering bigger boosted power, so there is a need for better understanding and better quality servicing, also quality service parts are critical.

Let me get straight to the point- if you go by price (fixed price servicing) or go to the local loser mechanical workshop who advertises cheap (essential)servicing for a $149.00 then you are asking for trouble , these prostitute mechanics using cheap gimmicks like cheap oil changes so they can rape your car for brakes and suspension items which they say you must get done now!

Oil is the life blood of your engine-this blog is focused on how important & yet how neglected  quality oil changes are

Why? , Car engines now rotate far faster and are equipped with turbo chargers (which the Impeller shaft can rotate @200000 rpm) car engines are equipped with variable valve solenoids all of which heavily rely on oil pressure & oil flow.

Car oil manufactures (Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline) spend millions of dollars developing additives and special agents for oil to meet different conditions ie winter and hot gruelling summer.

But my car does not use a drop of oil.., so why do I need a oil change so quickly?

Let me explain something.., Anything that rotates requires to be lubricated, I will say that again, anything that rotates requires to be lubricated. Oil is developed to get between components and actually causes the rotating component to float-this action cools the engine, minimizes friction (wear) and also gets rid of minute metal slivers carrying it back to the sump .The friction action eventually breaks down the oil, the reason why the oil level stays at the same level is because unburnt fuel seeps past the engine oil rings and enters into the sump. The unburnt fuel dilates the oil and breaks down the molecular structure. A characteristic of this is long heavy traffic trips of constant idling, then taking off for a moment, then back to idle.

The other critical issue for oil especially with diesels is that the opposite can happen, where oil by-passes the rings and gets into the combustion chamber, this oil is burnt in the combustion process and leaves in the exhaust system as soot, this soot is picked up by a particular filter in the exhaust system and burnt off in what is called a regeneration process.

The best oil to use is a synthetic oil (which is man made) or a blend of synthetic & mineral oil. Mineral oil should only be used on old tired engines, or new /recondition engine as a run in period or if you have a rotary engine. The problem with mineral oil is that it has a limited life span, this oil can turn to varnish then sludge.

What causes the most wear in a engine is cold start up- here are the reasons why!

-when the engine is sitting for hours, the oil will leave the engine components like camshaft, lifters & drain back to the sump, quality synthetic oil have sticking agents which still stick to the engine leaving a minute lubricating film, when the engine is started first thing in the morning there is adequate lubricating,

With old oil, there is no lubrication because it has lost its properties this causes metal on metal & premature wear.  In my many years I have seen so many engines written off because of neglect-varnish/sludge build up which has cause rings sticking to pistons, oil pressure starvation due to blocked pick up. I have seen where oil galleries have been  partially blocked  producing high oil pressure causing lifters to over extend making the valves come off their seats hence lost compression.

If your vehicle has a turbo or supercharger which is oil fed from the engine-then fully synthetic oil is a must.

Synthetic oil is not cheap-but if you want to keep your car in excellent condition with very limited wear and tear then synthetic oil is the way to go, petrol or diesel.

Do not be a loser, and put cheap oil in your prize car-use the best parts, the best filters it is the best way to make your engine last (- and save you in the long run.)

What is Your Hourly Rate?

It amazes me how many people ring me up for a immediate quote on a car which has major issues without giving me the chance to thoroughly inspect the vehicle and get a detailed analysis of what the real problem is. These penny pinchers ring one workshop after another until someone gives them the cheapest price possible. It’s easy to pick these type of people by their initial question- “ AND WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE ?”

For a job to be done properly it requires skilled labour which is the backbone of any quality, successful job and the price has to be paid – YOU CANNOT GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING!

Many years ago I took one of my ex-wives to court because she would not give information about the well-being of my daughter. In the initial interview with my solicitor, I stated my case and then asked “AND WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE?” My Solicitor laid back in his plush leather chair, crossed his arms, squinted his eyes and barked back at me, “DO YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR DAUGHTER OR NOT?”
“OF COURSE I DO, WHAT A SILLY QUESTION” I said defensively,
“THEN GET THE MONEY & DO NOT ASK ME MY FOR MY RATE!”

Bang… Talking about getting hit right between the eyes, but his words ‘GET THE MONEY’ kept ringing through my ears and something miraculous happened, I kept focussed, worked harder than I ever did before and presto I got the money, won the court case and got to see my daughter.

Watching my solicitor perform in court with confidence and poise was money well spent.

Skilled labour in any profession or sport takes years and years of practice. It’s doing that counts, not study or reading books. Organised refined labour is what gets the job done.

And there are no short cuts. The price has to be paid in any profession.

The surgeon who performs microscopic robotic surgery; the bricklayer who can lay hundreds and hundreds of bricks perfectly; the doctor administering a catheter to give a patient relief; the mechanic who can tune an engine for peak power and good economy; the nurse who showers, cleans and puts fresh bed linen on to give the patient dignity and hygiene; our brave soldiers fighting overseas so we can have peace in this country… all this is skilled labour and the full price has to be paid.

This is why I hate reality home improvement or renovation shows. I believe these misguiding television shows have a duty of care to perform especially in handling asbestos, dangerous other materials and of course they do not show the tedious hard work that trained professionals do because this will be boring and we cannot have that-people will switch channels to Family Feud.

Here is the irony. People who have mastered their profession make it look easy!

SO WHY DID I WRITE THIS BLOG?

I will give you the answer. A week has just passed since another dreadful balcony has collapsed, killing and maiming people at a Christmas party. The coronial inquiry will get the answers, but how many more people need to die or be injured because of shoddy workmanship or unscrupulous people wanting renovations and not wanting to pay the hourly rate for work to be done properly?

Miserable people who systematically try to screw down quotes from struggling tradesmen are the biggest cancer to the economy. What this does is force the tradesperson to buy rubbish from China. China is a Communist government with a Capitalist business ethic and they deliberately hold their currency low so they can export their rubbish to the world, they have no shame or respect for quality.

I refuse to fit Chinese parts to any cars I repair (experience here) unless it a Great Wall.

Any person who tries to screw me for price or tries to manipulate so that I cannot do my job properly to a set standard is not one of my customers and will know it.

GET THE MONEY, GET THE JOB DONE RIGHT. IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!
