Why Engine Oil Changes Are So Critical (Never Ever Neglect or Go Cheap)

In the 37 years I have been in the automotive industry (yes, I am old) nothing has caused more damage to car engines than neglect of quality servicing.

Cars now have more smaller engines which are delivering bigger boosted power, so there is a need for better understanding and better quality servicing, also quality service parts are critical.

Let me get straight to the point- if you go by price (fixed price servicing) or go to the local loser mechanical workshop who advertises cheap (essential)servicing for a $149.00 then you are asking for trouble , these prostitute mechanics using cheap gimmicks like cheap oil changes so they can rape your car for brakes and suspension items which they say you must get done now!

Oil is the life blood of your engine-this blog is focused on how important & yet how neglected  quality oil changes are

Why? , Car engines now rotate far faster and are equipped with turbo chargers (which the Impeller shaft can rotate @200000 rpm) car engines are equipped with variable valve solenoids all of which heavily rely on oil pressure & oil flow.

 Car oil manufactures (Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline) spend millions of dollars developing additives and special agents for oil to meet different conditions ie winter and hot gruelling summer.

But my car does not use a drop of oil.., so why do I need a oil change so quickly?

Let me explain something.., Anything that rotates requires to be lubricated, I will say that again, anything that rotates requires to be lubricated. Oil is developed to get between components and actually causes the rotating component to float-this action cools the engine, minimizes friction (wear) and also gets rid of minute metal slivers carrying it back to the sump .The friction action eventually breaks down the oil, the reason why the oil level stays at the same level is because unburnt fuel seeps past the engine oil rings and enters into the sump. The unburnt fuel dilates the oil and breaks down the molecular structure. A characteristic of this is long heavy traffic trips of constant idling, then taking off for a moment, then back to idle.

The other critical issue for oil especially with diesels is that the opposite can happen, where oil by-passes the rings and gets into the combustion chamber, this oil is burnt in the combustion process and leaves in the exhaust system as soot, this soot is picked up by a particular filter in the exhaust system and burnt off in what is called a regeneration process.

The best oil to use is a synthetic oil (which is man made) or a blend of synthetic & mineral oil. Mineral oil should only be used on old tired engines, or new /recondition engine as a run in period or if you have a rotary engine. The problem with mineral oil is that it has a limited life span, this oil can turn to varnish then sludge.

What causes the most wear in a engine is cold start up- here are the reasons why!

-when the engine is sitting for hours, the oil will leave the engine components like camshaft, lifters & drain back to the sump, quality synthetic oil have sticking agents which still stick to the engine leaving a minute lubricating film, when the engine is started first thing in the morning there is adequate lubricating,

With old oil, there is no lubrication because it has lost its properties this causes metal on metal & premature wear.  In my many years I have seen so many engines written off because of neglect-varnish/sludge build up which has cause rings sticking to pistons, oil pressure starvation due to blocked pick up. I have seen where oil galleries have been  partially blocked  producing high oil pressure causing lifters to over extend making the valves come off their seats hence lost compression.

If your vehicle has a turbo or supercharger which is oil fed from the engine-then fully synthetic oil is a must.

Synthetic oil is not cheap-but if you want to keep your car in excellent condition with very limited wear and tear then synthetic oil is the way to go, petrol or diesel.

Do not be a loser, and put cheap oil in your prize car-use the best parts, the best filters it is the best way to make your engine last (- and save you in the long run.)

What is Your Hourly Rate?

It amazes me how many people ring me up for a immediate quote on a car which has major issues without giving me the chance to thoroughly inspect the vehicle and get a detailed analysis of what the real problem is. These penny pinchers ring one workshop after another until someone gives them the cheapest price possible. It’s easy to pick these type of people by their initial question- “ AND WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE ?”

For a job to be done properly it requires skilled labour which is the backbone of any quality, successful job and the price has to be paid – YOU CANNOT GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING!

Many years ago I took one of my ex-wives to court because she would not give information about the well-being of my daughter. In the initial interview with my solicitor, I stated my case and then asked “AND WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE?” My Solicitor laid back in his plush leather chair, crossed his arms, squinted his eyes and barked back at me, “DO YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR DAUGHTER OR NOT?”
“OF COURSE I DO, WHAT A SILLY QUESTION” I said defensively,
“THEN GET THE MONEY & DO NOT ASK ME MY FOR MY RATE!”

Bang… Talking about getting hit right between the eyes, but his words ‘GET THE MONEY’ kept ringing through my ears and something miraculous happened, I kept focussed, worked harder than I ever did before and presto I got the money, won the court case and got to see my daughter.

Watching my solicitor perform in court with confidence and poise was money well spent.

Skilled labour in any profession or sport takes years and years of practice. It’s doing that counts, not study or reading books. Organised refined labour is what gets the job done.

And there are no short cuts. The price has to be paid in any profession.

The surgeon who performs microscopic robotic surgery; the bricklayer who can lay hundreds and hundreds of bricks perfectly; the doctor administering a catheter to give a patient relief; the mechanic who can tune an engine for peak power and good economy; the nurse who showers, cleans and puts fresh bed linen on to give the patient dignity and hygiene; our brave soldiers fighting overseas so we can have peace in this country… all this is skilled labour and the full price has to be paid.

This is why I hate reality home improvement or renovation shows. I believe these misguiding television shows have a duty of care to perform especially in handling asbestos, dangerous other materials and of course they do not show the tedious hard work that trained professionals do because this will be boring and we cannot have that-people will switch channels to Family Feud.

Here is the irony. People who have mastered their profession make it look easy!

SO WHY DID I WRITE THIS BLOG?

I will give you the answer. A week has just passed since another dreadful balcony has collapsed, killing and maiming people at a Christmas party. The coronial inquiry will get the answers, but how many more people need to die or be injured because of shoddy workmanship or unscrupulous people wanting renovations and not wanting to pay the hourly rate for work to be done properly?

Miserable people who systematically try to screw down quotes from struggling tradesmen are the biggest cancer to the economy. What this does is force the tradesperson to buy rubbish from China. China is a Communist government with a Capitalist business ethic and they deliberately hold their currency low so they can export their rubbish to the world, they have no shame or respect for quality.

I refuse to fit Chinese parts to any cars I repair (experience here) unless it a Great Wall.

Any person who tries to screw me for price or tries to manipulate so that I cannot do my job properly to a set standard is not one of my customers and will know it.

GET THE MONEY, GET THE JOB DONE RIGHT. IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!

Capped Price Servicing – What is the Truth?

In my last blog, I talked about CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT, how skills and an ongoing desire to be better is essential for better customer service without the gimmicks.. Which brings me to CAPPED PRICE SERVICE .

Capped Price Servicing was introduced by major car dealerships to try and reverse the poor customer retention rate which car dealerships created themselves through sky high servicing costs and poor customer service.
Their gimmick is simple – NO SURPRISES AND FIXED BASIC PRICE SERVICING.

Car dealerships do not make money selling new cars, their source of positive cash flow comes from spare parts, selling useless extended insurance and warranties (read the fine print), trade in cars (traded in at low price and sold high) and of course car servicing.

The truth is quality new cars do not need much service upkeep in their first 3-5 years or 50,000km which aligns with the dealership service plan. In other words they are only stating the obvious.

So what is the catch?

There has to be a catch right?

Car dealerships and franchises work on volume, while the profit margin is quite small, but because they do so many of these low skilled services (that’s how they make their profit) consequently brings a low skill technician. (I recently had one of these moron technicians working for me and let’s just say Hasta la vista BABY!)

The catch is cars are an ongoing load bearing rotating piece of a machinery. Anything that rotates on a car can and will wear. I WILL REPEAT THAT -ANYTHING ON A CAR THAT ROTATES CAN AND WILL WEAR. Tyres, fanbelts brakes, suspension, internal engine components, water pumps unless you park your car in a garage and let it sit there is the only way you can avoid wear and tear.

Pricing though important should not be the main focus to the diligent car owner. Now with turbos, direct injection and variable camshafts, it is critical to have the best oil, best tyres, the best quality filters. A dirty air filter can affect your ca’s performance, engine wear and fuel economy and yet is perhaps one of the most overlooked service component.

To the serious car owner your car should be looked at as a investment, no different to your home.

Your car is a vital piece of equipment, especially when it comes to picking up children from school, family and work commitments. Invest in your car. Do not  be swayed by capped pricing only to be  slugged like a wounded bull  when your service schedule is over or when your car is due for tyres and brakes.

Yes pricing is important, but a good quality technician who knows your car personally, has track records, works to a system and is totally open and transparent while using the best parts and has the best equipment WHICH HE USES ensuring motoring piece of mind.

Continual Improvement

Recently I was called by a concerned parent from New South Wales who had sold a car to her Son. The car was brought to Brisbane and had to have a safety certificate. The inspection was done at a competitor’s workshop and a failure was issued. The vehicle required $1,200 worth of repairs. The concerned parent was confused because their local mechanic had always serviced all their cars and HE SAID – THE CAR WAS OK… they trusted him… so who was telling the truth?

The vehicle was brought to my workshop and an inspection was performed and ‘YES!’ all faults were verified. My competitor did his job right and his quote was reasonable.

So where is the problem? The problem is with the old dinosaur/fart of a mechanic, THE GOOD BLOKE MECHANIC OR THE FRIEND OF THE FAMILY MECHANIC who has won over generations of family dynasties with his great bloke she will be right mate mannerisms – THESE MECHANICS SHOULD BE OUTLAWED and why? – simply one word… HUBRIS.

We live in a fast and complex world. Your car is more vital today than ever and your car is becoming more complex so reliability must be a high priority. No public transport, taxi or uber can take the place of a car when it comes to children and vital appointments which require to be met with in a set time.

A good technician/mechanic continually invests time in study and working to a system with a organized checklist. A good technician has the guts to invest money in the best diagnostic equipment $5,000- $40,000 a year whether he can afford it or not. A good technician analyses every car and ensures that it is up to safety certificate standard or gives a detailed report and quote what requires to be done. A good technician/mechanic FOCUSES ON SOLVING THE INITIAL CUSTOMER COMPLAINT and does not go for the easy upsells (easy money). Simply a good technician wants to be and is better every day, but most of all good technicians are committed and disciplined.

Just because a Dinosaur Mechanic says that he or she has 35 years of experience means absolutely nothing… what… 35 years of doing oil changes? Please retire.

Workshops that offer gimmicks, cheap heavily discounted services or have some other enticements are totally useless. The smooth talking service advisor who has not touched a spanner in 5 years is there only to sell and generally gives you a headache because they talk so much rubbish. These big mouths got out of the game because they are pretty boys that could not handle the hard work and discipline required to be good in their field.

The truth is nothing beats up to date hard earned skills, disciplines a systemised attitude of continual improvement and a genuine passion to be better educated for what they do and perform. Good technicians/mechanics are never satisfied because there is always a better way.

Which Petrol do I Use for my Car & What do Those Numbers Mean?

There is a bit of a mystery that petrol companies deliberately play to confuse the unsuspecting public about what is the right petrol to use for your car.

The petrol companies perceive that using a higher number octane will give you more power and better fuel economy. This is actually false!

High octane petrol cannot give you magical higher horse power unless your car’s engine is designed and tuned to take higher octane rating. So a normal 4 cylinder engine will not benefit from high octane fuel.

What is Octane? Please explain?

Octane ratings are not a measure of energy or power, but instead measure the point when a normal controlled fuel burning (propagation) inside the engine cylinder goes into a uncontrolled burning (detonation).

The picture on the left shows a smooth burning transition when the spark plug fires. The picture on the right shows pre-ignition that is the fuel igniting from excessive heat, when the flame fronts from the spark plug collide from the flame front of the pre-igniting source – its’ similar to a hammer hitting your engine. The result is possible internal engine damage – the term is referred as engine KNOCK.

Petrol companies can measure this knock and add anti knock agents like Toulene, Triptane, Isooctane to name just a few to increase the engine octane rating. Ie unleaded 91 to unleaded 95 add a bit more agents we have 98. These agents retard the rate of fuel burn, slowing the flame propagation down also eliminates pre-ignition.

E10 uses a sugar based ethanol which also works as a anti-knock agent.

How does Octane work properly and what are the benefits?

The basis of making horsepower is air. The amount of air entering the engine cylinders is then compressed by the piston, fuel is then added by the injector and ignited by the spark plug. The amount of air added is in direct proportion to the power made. Turbo chargers, super chargers, high lift camshafts, big valves, cold air intake, bigger throttle bodies are all in direct relation in getting more air into the (engine) cylinder hence the more air then more fuel is added and bigger bang. BINGO. MORE HORSE POWER! BUT WITH MORE HORSE POWER WE HAVE MORE HEAT, WHY?

The more air added to the engine has more air molecules rubbing and compressing against each other. This causes friction &friction causes heat.

To overcome this heat from detonating the fuel, Petrol companies have brought out fuel with higher octane levels to compensate the tendency for fuel to pre-ignite in a compressed state. The other benefit of higher octane is that car tuners whether that be in the factory or aftermarket can extract more ignition timing in a controlled state hence benefiting in extracting more horse power from the engine. The V8 Supercars take E85 which has a even higher octane rating of 105.

It is very essential to know what type of fuel your car requires. If it’s a sport model like a highly tuned Honda, Toyota and European sports, supercharged, turbocharged cars, chances it will probably take some special octane fuel. For any enquiries please call Manny’s Mechanical Repairs.

Manny’s Mechanical Repairs specializes in tuning, we have the latest diagnostic equipment, scanners, labscopes and dyno tunning gear to ensure your vehicle is tuned and running at it full potential.

Fuel Injectors – What Are They?

In recent months I have come along problems with fuel injectors and they seemed to be one of the most overlooked and under-serviced components in the engine, yet their role is so vital.

What are Fuel Injectors?

Fuel injectors spray a fine, atomized fuel in or to the combustion chamber of the engine. This fine spray of fuel combusts when the spark plug is fired in a smooth flame propagation or front which burns the fuel, causing a incredible amount of controlled pressure forcing the piston down the cylinder to the crankshaft.

The diesel injector works in the same principal, except there is no spark plug. The fuel is injected when the piston is arriving to the top of its stroke, the internal heat caused by the compression (or compressed air) ignites the diesel fuel forcing the piston down. It’s a matter of interest because the combustion process is a process of heat accumulation there is a significant KNOCK in a diesel engine; hence this is why diesel engine are more noisy than petrol engines.

What are the Benefits of Fuel Injectors?

Fuel injectors are electronically controlled by computers. It was discovered that unburnt fuel was one of the greatest pollutants so Governments put stipulations on car manufacturers to get emissions down. Fuel injection was the answer. Engineers discovered that using computer hardware and now software can program fuel injectors to inject fuel in a 1000th/second – so divide a second into a thousand and take 6-8 thousands of that to keep the injector spraying fuel (include injector dead time in that equation). This is called milliseconds or injector ON TIME. This can also be represented in injector duty cycle – on time compared the time the injector is not energized in a given cycle.

The real benefits was better fuel economy, more power, less emissions, easier start up, easier transition from cold start to normal operating stage.

Problems & Symptoms of Poor Performance Injector

  • Performance loss;
  • Engine stutter, hesitation and stumbling;
  • Engine misfire;
  • Increase in fuel consumption;
  • Rough idling, engine stalling;
  • Failed emission tests. (Do not mention the VW debacle – that’s another story!)

The Fix or Solution

Bring your car to MANNY`S MECHANICAL REPAIRS. Part of our service is to inform our customers that fuel injectors should be serviced every 80 000-100 000km and here is the reason:

  • Injectors collect contaminants from the fuel tank or from a bad batch of fuel from the refineries.
  • Injectors can develop carbon build up on the spraying pintles causing a partial blockage.
  • Injectors can have electromagnetic faults affecting the speed and operation of their performance.
  • Injectors may have fuel pump delivery problems.

Here at MANNY`S MECHANICAL REPAIRS we have full diagnostic facilities. We also recommend and perform inline fuel rail injector service, which cleans intake manifold, pistons, injectors and exhaust. we add fuel tank additive at 80 000 to 100 000km.

At 180 000-200 000km we strongly recommend the physical removal of injectors, to be bench tested before ultrasonic bathed and have each individual injector flow & load tested with results recorded, new o rings ,seals fitted.

IF YOU CANNOT MEASURE IT YOU CANNOT MANAGE IT

On one last note, we strongly recommend replacing fuel filters on every diesel service.. true the cost is higher but we are constantly astounded of the ridiculous amounts of water and rubbish found in diesel fuel filters.

I hope this has helped.

Petrol or Turbo Diesel – Which Engine is Better or Do I Buy?

In recent years engine management technology (engine computers) have made incredible performance development in both turbo diesel and petrol engines. “So what’s the difference or which one do I buy?” you might ask.

Petrol and diesel fuels have different molecular density. Petrol and diesel produce power through different applications of combustion process. Torque is turning force, horse power is the speed of the turning force.

Turbo Diesel Advantages

Excellent fuel economy; excellent low down torque; robust; excellent carrying or towing trailers, boats and caravans; great for long trips; 4WD up sand dunes; great fro going through creeks.

Petrol Advantages

Smoother operation; less emission and far better emission control; better for small trips; cheaper servicing cost; engine can reach higher revolutions quicker hence more horse power; more responsive.

When thinking of buying your next car or 4WD write down what type of usage you need from your vehicle. If it’s small trips, occasional trip to the coast, or mainly to pick up the kids from school, then petrol is the go. If you do a lot of heavy duty work or towing, go up big sand dunes or up the Toowoomba range, then turbo diesel is the way to go.

Manny’s Mechanical Repairs services both petrol and turbo diesel engines. We provide a full detail safety report and give the customer a full comprehension and understanding in the condition of their vehicles.

How to Become The Chosen One

What I am Looking for in a Potential Employee

This is the time of year when school finishes and young people come out looking for work. Already I have had a number of young people walking through my front door unannounced (in thongs and stubbies) handing me a piece of paper (a resume), which carefully typed says something like hard worker, work experience – breast feeding puppies at the RSPCA, earned high distinction for origami blah, blah, blah. I say thank you then point to the door and throw the resume in the bin – waste of time.

Time is the vital ingredient in running a successful business. Business is touch. I have 15 other mechanical workshops within 800 meters all trying to put me out of business. It’s a fact that 80% of businesses shut down in the first four years.

Australia is a worker orientated country – we have high wages, superannuation, high taxes, holiday pay and add the business has to pay for any mistakes the employee makes. Sickies and it goes on top of emotional problems the employee may have. All of this must be paid for out of the business.

It’s not easy for young people. Here are some of the problems:

  • They only put on people with experience;
  • There are no jobs out there;
  • I do not know what to do to get employed?

The problem is schools do not teach how to become employable or how to compete and survive in the outside world apart from study. Why? Because teachers have never lived in the real world – oxymorons.

So here is some advice I can give to anyone looking to star a career in mechanics and what I look for:

  • Desire – decide that you want to become a mechanic for the right reasons (like making a fire breathing engine come to life from a bucket of bolts).
  • Buy a car you can afford and study it. Learn everything you can about the car, how the brakes work, how the ignition works.
  • Read, read, read – read everything about the car. Get on the internet. Learn everything about it. Become a student.
  • Do mechanical courses. Enroll yourself. Get government grants then use what you learnt straight away on your car.
  • Get another part-time job to give you cash to finance your mechanical education.
  • Buy yourself tools to do the job. Funnily enough I judge a mechanic by the size of their tool box. Why? Because it shows commitment in doing the job properly. Good mechanics are always looking for good tools.
  • Take photos of your work and put it in a resume. Be proud of your work and show the world!
  • Be a good reader and be able to write. This is a must. But focus on the mechanical side to be able to explain what you are doing.
  • Develop good internet skills. The internet is the greatest invention of the modern era. Use it to gain relevant knowledge on the car you are working on.
  • Research the company you want to work for. Get on their website, understand what they do. Ring up and make time for an interview. Never walk in unprepared.
  • Dress smart. What you must understand, the business is everything to the owner. If you walk in casual or not dressed then you do not deserve to work there.
  • Never ever give up!
  • Driver’s licence. No licence? Forget it!

There is a saying that the teacher will arrive when the student is ready. By following these steps, which I have outlined above, this will give you the focus and skill set that employees are looking for. It’s not easy, but then everything is hard before it becomes easy. There is risk and costing. But you are training yourself to become employable. You are showing commitment, focus, and if you believe in yourself and your destiny, you will win and be the chosen one.
